HANDMADE ELIZABETHAN STYLE OAK STOOL. This example has hand-carved thumbnail rails and fluted legs joined by  deep scratch moulded stretchers. Early period stools were generally between twenty three to twenty four inches in height to suit the tables of the day. The toes of the legs always protruded beyond the base of the stretchers although damp floors and woodworm combined with heavy usage would often wear them down, sometimes to the extent that, when we find this furniture today, the stretchers are sitting  directly on the floor.
