MEDIEVAL STYLE OLD OAK HANDMADE DOOR a |

Here
you can see the four individual vertical planks that make up the outer
skin of the door and the unequally spaced ribs, that are not all exactly
the same (modern brains find it difficult to do this!). These ribs were
cut by hand using old fashioned moulding planes. Each plank slides behind
its partner - a clever system devised by medieval craftsmen, particularly
when working with cleaved oak (i.e. split down the medullary rays, rather
than cut) and used extensively on internal partition panelling, as well
          as doors. |
