EXTERIOR BOARDED DOOR AND FRAME IN OLD OAK, handmade for the rear of an 18th century thatched cottage. This simple ledged door has bead moulds cut down one edge of the vertical boards, a very common treatment for doors, both external and internal, from the early 18th century and onwards. The nails fixing the ledges are bent over on the external face. The installation of this door and frame necessitated some rebuilding of the adjoining walls and this has been carried out using traditional lime mortar. Incredibly, this door measures only 5’ in height, from top of cill to underside of wall plate! Together with the frame it has been left to naturally weather. |
